Challenge
A major fast food chain was wanting to find an additional manufacturer in the Midwest to supply four of their distribution centers in the region. We had to determine the best geographic location and build the appropriately sized plant that met the needs of this request.
Solution
I determined the plant location to be a recently shut down 90,000 sq. ft. asset of my then-parent company. Then, I was only supplied the specifications of the products to be made as well as the annual volumes bought from the customer.
From that limited information, I had to determine the respective size and number of production lines, calculate the mass flow balance needs, design the plant layouts, develop the capital budget request and pro-formas with the finance team, issue the PO’s, then act as the general contractor to ensure the equipment was installed and started up on time.
Outcome
With long lead-time, equipment was pre-ordered in the Spring, demolition and renovation began in May, and the first truck of approved product was shipped in December. Project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.
